United Way Campaign at Midpoint

The 2008 United Way campaign goal of $1,500,000 was set by Campaign Chair, Mary Berckely, of Fifth/Third Bank, with the support of her campaign team. Although this is $125,000 less than last year’s goal, the campaign volunteers are facing a greater challenge this year in reaching the goal. To date, the team has raised 45% of the goal, and still need $765,000 to achieve the goal. The poor economy is a reflection of both the need of individuals and the challenge the campaign team faces in raising funds.
United Way has been involved with new initiatives and would like to thank those who made it possible. The Port Huron Ice Hawks invited United Way to participate with their first home game to raise funds for United Way. Many area businesses showed their support by asking the community to LIVE UNITED through signage. The Times Herald has supported the United Way and Partner Agencies weekly in the newspaper. And Seaway Community Bank continues to donate an office in the Downriver area to offer resources to the local residents. It’s because of their support, community awareness is focused on United Way.
Besides the new initiatives, United Way is continuing traditions, like the Early Bird Drawing. Alice Rieves, Mid-City Nutrition Director, has volunteered again to have a Roast Pork dinner fundraiser for United Way, December 6th. Both summer events, Lake Huron International Regatta and the Utility Charity Golf Classic, were held and raised over $10,000. And the Great Lakes Freighter Raffle Tickets will be available again in December.
